New open casting call scheduled for Lionsgate feature film 'The Hunger Games' aka 'Artemis'

New open casting calls for "The Hunger Games" May 3 & 6, 2011.
Previous open casting calls took place in Concord and Shelby, North Carolina and Fort Mill, South Carolina.

Note: "The Hunger Games" has been using the working title of "Artemis". A working title is the temporary name of a film used during its development. Working titles are used primarily for two reasons - the first being that an official title has not yet been decided upon and the working title is being used as a filler for naming purposes, the second being to intentionally disguise the production of a high profile film. In some cases a working title may ultimately be used as the official title. This "title ruse" is now a very common practice by which these high-profile films or television series is given a fake working title to keep its production a secret, and to prevent price gouging by suppliers, casual theft and undesirable attention.

The extras casting director for the Lionsgate feature film "The Hunger Games" are holding a new open casting calls in Shelby, NC and Hendersonville, NC for local area adults and some youths to work as background performers on the film. The production will be hiring over one thousand extras throughout filming, in addition for stand-ins and photo doubles for the film's stars.

Four time Academy Award nominee Gary Ross is directing from a screenplay by Billy Ray, who has written screenplays for such films as "Hart's War," "Flightplan," and "State of Play". Ray's screenplay is adopted from author Suzanne Collins novel "The Hunger Games," which is the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy with 8.8 million copies in print.

Nina Jacobson and her production company Color Force is producing. Nina Jacobson has built an impressive career as a senior film executive and producer, including stints at DreamWorks, Universal and Disney, where she served as President of Walt Disney Motion Picture Group.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin May 23, 2011 in North Carolina. Shooting will continue through September 3, 2011. The film is set for a theatrical release on March 23, 2012.

Story:

The script is understandably being kept under tight wraps, with actors auditioning from sides printed out from the novel. The following is a story description based on the novel...

In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.
